Fanfic Writers Of The Future

You are, like, so wrong. Because Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead could be regarded as fanfiction, therefore all fanfiction is that good. And you didn't write Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, so therefore logically you can't complain about me talking about my 'l33t++ PotterSue being a waste of valuable seconds of your life and attention, because unless you can write like Shakespeare (and just wait till you see my contorted claim that Shakespeare could be construed as fanfic) or Tom Stoppard writing Shakespeare you obviously can't tell whether a field is largely shit and stinks. Whereas I WRITE FANFIC, so I can. And I read about someone who wrote fanfiction and got a job on the show's writing team! Where they write fanfiction, only for money. And if you're really good, you can be Kevin J. Anderson and do novelisations of L. Ron Hubbard. And anyway, being a good writer has nothing to do with the hard work of establishing your own characterisation rather than leaving half the effort to ride on reader assumptions. And you must be some sort of elitist. So I'm going to SCREAM AND SCREAM ABOUT HOW GOOD MY FANFIC IS UNTIL I TURN BLUE. And I'm not a whiny little shit with no creativity. How dare you.

I know what you're saying. I do, I do. But I reserve the right to be proud of what I've written, and to *know* - because I know the inside of my own head - that appreciably similar levels of creativity go into my fanfic as go into my original writing. (Anyone who wants to say "Well, I hate to think what that says about your original writing" is welcome to - this is [info]dot_cattiness after all.)

And when I write fanfic, I write it for myself. But I know I've friends who like the way I write, so sometimes I share it with them. I don't write it so other people can read it - I don't really write anything so other people can read it, unless someone asks for something specific.

And I'm not a whiny little shit with no creativity. 'm not 'm not 'm not. :)

You write stuff that isn't fanfic, therefore you are a writer. And you know that it's not quite the same - as you said, it's 'appreciably similar' - which is not identical, whereas someone whose entire 'writing' 'career' consists of a batch of hacked-together Britney Spears fantasies would have NO IDEA what goes into REAL writing.

And yes, before anyone decides to ask, yes, I do write. Short stories, suspense and horror, mainly. Not published yet, but I haven't tried.

Well, yes. The thing is, I can't even get my head around the concept of writing nothing but fanfic - I've always assumed it was something people did *as well*. I can't understand how the first thing someone ever wrote could be fanfic, nor how it could be the only thing they wrote. While I don't think fanfic is non-creative or just "an exercise", one thing it is by definition is limiting. I don't think I could do that to myself.

Fanfic is a folk form. Its purpose is to be created for an audience of other creators of the same stuff. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with stuff that's written to be written, but the existence of Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (and that's always the example given) does not make fanfic in general more than training wheels.

I want better flames on this post, dammit. I'm trying to shape it into something for my own journal, whose readership includes published writers of the original-characterisation sort. Which is apparently a subgenre of fanfic, according to the post four posts before this one.

While I understand your incredulity, I can't help feeling the same way about a ton of my original writing. I don't struggle to come up with these ideas - they just appear in my head, usually fully-formed. It always feels practically the same as fanfic, except that with fanfic I can at least know who to thank for having brought the matter to my attention.

This is one of those things where someone tries to claim their fanfic isn't complete shit by claiming that because something that can be contrived to be seen as in the same category is good, theirs must be as well, isn't it? Like gays who go on about the number of fantastically creative gay people in history when they show the creativity of a scene-fashion Xerox machine and have a personality that's paper-thin.

I'd apply the same nugget of wisdom I've applied to other areas of potential creativity (specifically, anime, since that's where I first saw the attitude I wanted to highlight): "Just because it is fanfic doesn't mean it is good".
